For future reference, before you try to get out of a ticket by telling a judge that, the DOT does not test nor do they approve anything. Aftermarket HIDs in halogen reflectors (like on your truck) are illegal in the US. You can take a coffee cup and stamp DOT approved on it and it would mean the same thing as a vendor claiming DOT approved headlights. If the lights do not say Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108 on them, then they are illegal for road use in the US. It's also illegal to import and sell imported HIDs in the US and that is what most of the HIDs on the market are.

Thanks for the reference. Maybe I should post this in the lights forum so HID owners know what will or won't hold up in court.

Here's a bit of light reading on the subject. Came across these when I was researching HIDs for my truck:

    http://isearch.nhtsa.gov/files/deetz.ztv.html
Thus, your company’s HID conversion kit is not a design that conforms to the Standard and could not be certified as complying with FMVSS No. 108, nor imported into or sold in the United States.

I should advise you that we know of no HID conversion kit that can be certified by its manufacturer as complying with FMVSS No. 108.
There are lots more similar letters.

Cool - making a copy for the light forum as reference information.

Couple weeks ago finished refining audio and added 2-way remote start/alarm. Build log update when I've got time to do pics. VERY happy with how everything turned out and should be through with mods for the year. Time to focus on my other project and decide if Big Daddy's gonna be playing out of state for the rest of the year.
